DRUG SCENARIOS
IN THE PHILIPPINES
![]() According to Philstar, there are 1.7 million illegal drug users in the Philippines. Out of 48,532 drug-related cases in 2015, only 178 were resolved, with some cases dating back to 2002 or the year the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act became law. According to the DDB study, at least 34,438 individuals were arrested for shabu alone in 2015, a 17-fold increase from 4,053 arrests in 2010. Among the five regions covered by the DDB survey from Dec. 5, 2015 to Feb. 5, 2016 – National Capital Region, Northern and Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao – Visayas registered the highest rate of drug use prevalence, followed by NCR. A website named "alcoholrehab.com" quoted that reports of drug related crime are common in the Philippines media. The main concern tends to be towards Shabu which gets the most media attention. It does seem that illegal drug use is on the rise, and this has worrying implications for the future. There is an urgent need to educate young people as to the dangers of drug use, and there is also a great need to help those who are already addicted to escape their misery. Failure to do this could mean there will be further deterioration within many Filipino communities. Sources: Philstar Headlines
